In a world increasingly run by machines and mass production, RICHPLANT is proudly cultivating a different kind of success - one rooted in patience, passion, and plants that feel like they’ve been grown with soul.
Nestled on a lush six-hectare glasshouse property since 1998, this unique nursery is not your average commercial operation. It’s the life’s work of Richard, a seasoned grower and lifelong plant hobbyist who has been lovingly tending to greenery for over 40 years, and is a key part of Decorum and their brand values.
A Plantsman’s Paradise
It all started with Spathiphyllum, then Gardenia, and over time, Richard grew not just plants but a philosophy: quality above quantity. Today, RICHPLANT focuses on just twenty carefully chosen genera - each one selected for its beauty, uniqueness, or forgotten charm.
This isn’t a place where robots plant, water, and sort. This is a nursery where human hands and thoughtful eyes shape each plant’s journey. “Some places have machinery and robots, but here we’re playing a different sport,” as Richard often says.
Powering Plants Responsibly
Modern energy costs and sustainability challenges haven’t gone unnoticed here. RICHPLANT is tackling both head-on with a solar-powered heat generation system and all LED lighting. It’s one of many ways the nursery blends traditional horticulture with forward-thinking innovation.
Growing the Rare and the Remarkable
If you’re looking for run-of-the-mill greenery, this isn’t the place. RICHPLANT specializes in the extraordinary - the plants that either demand a little more heat, a bit more care, and sometimes a bit more attention than most commercial outlets can offer. From the exotic Adenium (Desert Rose), which requires precise growinfg to become the stunning faux bonsai-type plant we see before us, to the up-and-coming hotshot Curcuma (with blooms that last over a month!), every plant here tells a story.
• Bird of Paradise in 19cm pots with two flowers: a first in the market, from stock previously used only for cut flowers. Their 30cm versions can even sport four noses and up to seven flowers!
• Epipremnum ‘Gold Finger’: a dazzling golden selection developed right here at the nursery. Set to seduce houseplant fans soon as!
• Aphelandra: dramatic and adaptable, grown botanically and sold without the bloom (as a great foliage plant), or with the bloom, as something entirely different!
• Caladium ‘Sweetheart’: the easiest of its kind, such a now plant, consumers love it- although remember to lift and store the corms during their winter dormancy.
• Plumeria (Frangipani) - which thrives only under very specific tropical conditions - something most nurseries don’t have the resource for. Tending to the plants does require you to be shirtless though, it’s hot hot hot.
Little Things, Big Love
At RICHPLANT, even the little details matter, and there’s some great natural ways that the team deal with potential threats to their precious plants. There are two resident cats on site - not just for cuddles, but for mice! And, Alyssum (Lobularia) is grown not just for its scent, but because it encourages mosquitoes that prey on various pests.
For Everyone: Big or Small
With minimums starting as low as 2,000 plants, RICHPLANT ensures that each item receives proper care and attention. But florists and smaller garden centers haven’t been forgotten. They can order just one shelf or even a few standout plants to make their displays shine. This is really unique!
Take-Home Plant Wisdom
Before you leave, I picked up a few tips for you plant lovers:
If you have a tropical plant with green leaves, take off the leaves towards the end of the season. Leaving them to yellow can lead to rot. Be brave, it’s better for the plant in the long run…
With decades of knowledge, a heart for the unusual, and a greenhouse full of wonders, RICHPLANT isn’t just growing plants - it is cultivating joy, wonder, and a little bit of magic. Whether you’re a collector, florist, or just someone who appreciates the green things in life, this is a grower you’ll want to know.
Because at RICHPLANT, the difference isn’t just what they grow - it’s how they grow it.
