I write this Substack sitting on the patio of the very first hotel I ever stayed in overseas, Die Port can Cleve in Enkhuizen. I have ordered an ice tea, also one of the first drinks I drank overseas (at the age of 18), and frikadellen (mini burgers) are on the way. I’m feeling good.
As some of you know, I’ve had about six weeks of illness, which didn’t half slow me down (to a standstill no less), so to be on a little business trip is an utter delight.
Oh, the not-so-unattractive waiter has just brought me my iced tea, which includes a plastic lemon tamper, something I’ve never seen outside of the Netherlands.
This week is the Pack Trials, basically an event for European breeding companies to show their new plants. It is more geared towards the garden centre market, as buyers want to look at the product in the packs, i.e growing in trays and pots, so they can see how good the plants perform, and how good they might look on their garden centre bench!
My first stop was Hem Genetics, a company that I first visited when I was 18 years old, on that first trip to the Netherlands. In those days, they were a much smaller company, these days they have extended their portfolio beyond compare, with some game changing items coming through on the regular basis.
