The Fleuroselect (the international organisation for the ornamental plants industry) trials at RHS Hyde Hall showcased the fantastic diversity of sunflowers this week, offering a glimpse into the wide array of sunflower types that might even make your neighbour ask, βIs that a Zinnia?β.
From towering giants (some were double my height) to compact varieties, and from classic yellow hues to deep reds, sunflowers offer something for everyone (even if that someone is just your inner kid).
Here are a few that caught my eye at the Fleuroselect trials.
'Lemon Cutie': A bright an cheerful dwarf variety
Winner of the Fleuroselect Gold Medal 2023, 'Lemon Cutie' is a dwarf sunflower that stands out with its bright, lemon-yellow blooms. Unlike the typical tall sunflower, 'Lemon Cutie' reaches a modest height of 50cm (20 inches) and spreads about 40cm (16 inches).
Its semi-double flowers, averaging 10cm in diameter, are both unusual and long-lasting, making it a lovely choice for various garden settings. Despite being pollen-free, this variety is still rich in nectar, attracting pollinators to your garden π¦π
'Lemon Cutie' is perfect for small borders, pot displays and mass plantings, adding a splash of sunshine wherever it grows.
